Developing an instructional package for teaching basic Saw-Dung with music accompaniment in Matthayomsuksa 4 Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Se
Music plays an important role in improving human quality of life. The study of music can help develop a person physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Since the music subject is skill-based, the best way to learn is by playing. Thus, students should learn how to play an instrument as part of their education, and it can be a Thai or western instrument. In addition, students are interested in this subject, because they get a chance to perform, and they are pleased when they see that they can play music.
The Saw-Dung is one of the most popular instruments used in music performance classes in the Thai educational system. Currently, many schools offer music performance classes as free electives designed to encourage students to find their potential so that they can further their studies or plan their careers.
From his teaching experience and from preliminary studies, the researcher identified problems in performing Thai music subject and in teaching Saw-Dung in classroom which can be concluded as follows: (1) Lack of technical exercises ranging from elementary to advance levels for each instrument (2) The way of teaching a Thai musical instrument had changed from one-to-one to one teacher to a group of learner (3) It was difficult to practice the Saw-Dung in the beginning. Students needed patience, but they get bored and finally gave up studying.
For these reasons, the researcher was interested in developing and experimenting with an instructional package for teaching basic Saw-Dung with music accompaniment. In designing the instructional package, there were several objectives. (1) The instructional package should be divided into levels from easy to advance. (2) It should be possible to use the instructional package to teach a number of students at the same time. (3) It should contain sample songs for students to listen for intonation accuracy. (4) It should help motivate students and build good attitudes towards the Saw-Dung class. (5) It should set an example for the development of instructional packages for other instruments. The standard for the instruction package was set at 80/80
The population for this research was 31 students, who had never learned Saw-Dung before. They were all Mathayomsuksa 4 level students (15-16 years old) at Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Secondary School. The amount of time spent in this research was 12 lesson periods.
The research found that the instructional package for teaching basic Saw-Dung as a free elective course was effective at 86.26/89.03, which was higher than the 80/80 standard. The students also developed good attitude towards the instruction package for teaching basic Saw-Dung
